Welcome to Week 6 of your shred journey! After focusing on alternate picking and sweep picking, it’s time to take on another fundamental shred technique—legato. This style of playing involves hammer-ons and pull-offs to create smooth, flowing lines with minimal picking. It’s great for developing finger strength, coordination, and a fluid sound.
Before starting, be sure to take rests and stretch your hands between exercises. Legato playing requires extra effort to produce clean and consistent sound without picking every note.
In Week 1, we worked on four 1-string legato patterns. This week, we’re stepping it up by adding a second string and practicing new combinations.
✅ Tip: The first pick stroke is played only once at the beginning, everything else is legato.
1- 3 Legato patterns on 2 strings: (10 minutes)
Now, let’s take Pattern 1 and apply it across all 6 strings and 7 scale shapes in G major. This will solidify your legato across the entire neck.
Next up, we’ll repeat the process with Pattern 2, applying it to all 7 shapes as well.
Great work! This week’s legato drills will help you build strength and speed while making your playing smoother and more expressive. Focus on clarity and evenness, and don’t rush through the patterns. As always, consistency is key.
See you next week with more shred routines!
