Welcome to Week 3 of your shred transformation journey! Over the past two weeks, we’ve built a strong foundation with alternate picking and scale patterns. Now, it’s time to supercharge your technique with scale sequences—essential tools for creating fast, melodic runs and building serious fretboard fluency.
Scale sequences are recurring melodic patterns within a scale. These sequences are commonly used in solos and technical runs and are a must-know for any shredder. They not only boost your picking speed and coordination but also help you break out of boring, linear scale runs.
This week, we’ll focus on two of the most important sequences:
– A 4-note linear sequence
– A sequence based on intervals of 3rds
Each one will be applied across all 7 scale shapes to develop total control.
This is one of the most essential sequences in shred guitar. You’ll play four notes up the scale, then start from the next note and repeat the process. It sounds awesome at high speed and helps develop accuracy and synchronization.
Practice this in all 7 scale shapes:
This sequence involves playing every third note of the scale—a classic way to create melodic variation. It sounds musical and is used in countless solos across rock, metal, and neoclassical genres.
Apply it to all 7 shapes:
These two scale sequences are absolute game-changers when it comes to building shredding vocabulary. Take your time to master them cleanly before trying to go full speed. The better you get at these now, the easier it’ll be to tackle advanced licks in the coming weeks.
Have a focused and fun practice session—see you next week!
