12-Week Shred Guitar Mastery

Shred Routine: Week 12

Final Week Overview

You made it! Over the past eleven weeks, we’ve covered the core elements of modern shred guitar technique. By now, you should feel faster, cleaner, and far more confident on the fretboard.

For this final week we’ll cap things off with alternate‑picking pedal‑tone licks in the styles of Yngwie Malmsteen and Paul Gilbert. Think of these as both victory laps and jump‑off points for further study.

Have fun, and give each exercise your best execution!

1. Yngwie‑Style Pedal‑Note Warm‑Up

A neoclassical line from “I’ll See the Light” (Yngwie Malmsteen). Perfect for warming up and building speed.

Time: 10 minutes

2. Connecting Shapes with an Alternate‑Picking Pattern

One of our familiar patterns, but it travels through multiple scale shapes—great for linking positions across the neck.

Time: 5 minutes

3. Classic Single‑String Yngwie Lick

A trademark one‑string run, focus on smooth position shifts.

Time: 5 minutes

4. Second Neoclassical One‑String Lick

Another fiery Yngwie‑inspired idea to push your endurance.

Time: 10 minutes

5. Paul Gilbert‑Style Shape‑Crossing Line

A clever way to navigate several scale shapes with strict alternate picking.

Time: 10 minutes

6. String‑Skipping Warm‑Up

A short drill that combines pedal tones with wide skips—excellent for synchronizing both hands.

Time: 5 minutes

7. Classic Gilbert Descending Scale Lick

A rapid six‑string descent—use economy of motion and stay relaxed.

Time: 10 minutes

8. Repetitive‑Motion Picking Loop

A cyclical lick that’s fantastic for locking in right‑hand mechanics.

Time: 5 minutes

Wrap‑Up

That’s a wrap on the 12‑Week Shred Routine! Continue revisiting these drills, mix them into your own practice, and most importantly, apply the techniques to real music. Keep pushing, stay inspired, and be the best guitarist you can be.

Happy shredding, and see you in the next adventure!
