12-Week Shred Guitar Mastery

Shred Routine: Week 10

Alternate Picking – Pedal Note Technique

This week, we’ll explore alternate picking using a classical-inspired technique called the pedal note. This idea goes all the way back to the Baroque era with composers like Bach and Vivaldi, and it’s fantastic for building finger independence and sharpening your picking precision.

Let’s jump into it!

Examples 1–10 (60 minutes)

1. Pedal Note Exercise in A Minor

A solid warm-up for both hands.

2. Pedal Note in E Minor

A melodic pattern that targets coordination and accuracy.

3. Pedal Note on One String

Great for isolating picking and focusing on rhythmic control.

4. Pedal Note Ending with a Fast Scale Run

This one mixes pedal tones with quick scalar movement.

5. Pedal Note Etude with String Skipping

A more advanced idea that forces your picking hand to stay sharp.

6. Pedal Note Lick in A Harmonic Minor

Spice things up with harmonic minor flavor.

7. Pedal Note Lick with String Skipping

A powerful warm-up and picking control drill.

8. Pedal Note with Chromatic Movement on Strings 1 and 2

Great for finger dexterity and left-hand clarity.

9. Pedal Note Lick in the Style of Vinnie Moore

Fast, flashy, and full of neoclassical energy.

10. Pentatonic Pedal Note Lick with String Skipping

Wrap up the session with a modern shred vibe.

That’s it for Week 10! You’ve made solid progress so far, your technique and speed should already feel stronger. Keep up the great work and get ready for more exciting challenges in Week 11 and Week 12. See you in the next session!
